This painful epithet, "Ye adulteresses," is the key-note of the chord which James strikes in his appeal. Another form of pride is the desire to be honoured and praised by others. 3. You adulteresses! Some may wonder why such negative feelings like these are part of true repentance. And every day 1 more life is lost through suicide. Or it may be that James 4:5 speaks in two independent sentences, and that the words of Scripture quoted refer to what was said in James 4:4. But what precisely is this "friendship"? Well, now, you see the enmity between God and the world. And how does grace operate, but just by killing the love of the world within the soul, and breathing into it the love of God? But the apostle appeals to their consciences to confess whether such a state of mind was not due to their walking "after the flesh' instead of "after the Spirit." In what sense the word "world" is to be taken(1) "The world" is often put to signify the wicked men of the world, whether unbelievers or believers, of evil and profligate lives (1 Corinthians 11:32). 2. And "the humble," who realize must deeply that they do not deserve any grace at all, are those upon whom God has always bestowed the most copious supplies. 2. (5) An enemy to the people of God. 1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? supplies of grace greater in force and volume than the strength of their depravity, or the temptations against which they have to contend. spiritual, but the love of the world is impure, unclean, profane, and sensual; wherefore no man can love God and the world. Our Friendship with the World (4:4-6)A. You cannot but see how plainly this tends to wear away and utterly extirpate all sense and regard of God and religion out of our minds. Since, accordingly, this friendship represents direct opposition to the Divine will, every man who seeks it first and most declares himself by that very act "an enemy of God.". Let us take the case where the purpose is an intellectual gratification. If you feel that way, I have got news for you: You have been fooled by a terribly false standard. (2) An enemy to the grace of God. God commandeth holiness to be fruitful in all good works, to His glory, and to increase therein to ripeness, and a full measure in Jesus Christ. (this is quoted from Proverbs 3:34). It is a state of the heart. This helps us to see that the lines between conflict with God and man are often quite blurry. But the world moveth us to filthy conversation, to defile ourselves with carnal lusts and all ungodliness. Thus if we are friends of the world, we would also be conformed to the world in our attitudes, thinking, lifestyle, interests, and values. James 4:4, NASB: "You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? The culpable courting of the world's friendship here condemned manifests itself —. 4.) The sacred writers with one consent take up an attitude of protest against worldliness. It is only then that He can forgive us and our fellowship with Him can be restored.We have already seen three steps in submitting ourselves to God: Resisting the Devil's temptations, drawing nearer to God, and Cleansing our hands and hearts. Look up both Old Testament and New Testament verses to see how they use the word. Rather, He gives grace to the humble, who admit that they are empty and ask God to fill them. Here these friendships with the world which betray Christ are marked by two opprobrious characters. Doesn't matter how you do it - only be a wealthy man.' Scripture: James 4:7.
